- August - The usurper Basiliscus is deposed and Zeno is restored as Eastern Roman Emperor.
- September 4 - Romulus Augustus, the last Emperor of the Western Roman Empire, is deposed when Odoacer proclaims himself King of Italy. Conventional date for the fall of the Roman Empire, and widely considered the end of ancient history. However the Eastern Roman Empire survives the event.
