Bandon, County Cork

The town of Bandon (Droichead na Bandan in Irish) in County Cork is located 27 km southwest of Cork City, Ireland, on the N71 road. Bandon is sometimes called the "Gateway to West Cork". The town dates from the early 17th century.

Owing to its high proportion of Protestants and its once-thriving market, Bandon is commonly said to be the place "where the pigs are Protestant".

With a population of roughly 7,000 people, Bandon lies on the River Bandon between two hills. The name in Irish means "Bridge of the Bandon", a reference to the origin of the town as a crossing-point on the river. In 2004 Bandon celebrated its quatercentenary.
