The Battle of Ourique took place in the Ouriquen countryside, present-day Alentejo (southern Portugal) in 1139. In this battle, the forces of Alphonse-Henriques de Portugal and those of the Moor fought. The Moors were weakened by internal problems, and the victory for the Christian Alphonse I was such that he proclaimed himself King of Portugal with the overwhelming support of his troops, having vanquished and slain five Moorish kings. In commemoration of this event, the Portuguese arms bear five standards and five escudets.
