beautiful. is the third album from Fantastic Plastic Machine. It is the follow-up to Luxury. beautiful. is generally regarded as one of his most critical works, signaling a maturation from his previous Shibuya-kei style to a rich blend of house music and '70s Philly soul. The album took eight months to produce, taking Tanaka to such places as the legendary Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia and New York City's Quad Studios. While at Quad Studios, Tanaka recorded songs with Hirth Martinez and jazz singer Bob Dorough.
Trivia
The Japanese cover of the album was replaced in the U.S. and Europe with a different cover. The front cover depicts a maze in the shape of a butterfly, while the back cover shows a maze in the shape of a picture of Tanaka himself.
