It was founded as a metallurgical center in 1915. Bengang is the largest steel manufacture in Benxi. Near Benxi one can find the unique caves which can be explored for over three kilometres as the underground river winds and turns. Benxi remains polluted due to the proximity of steel production. The surrounding area has beautiful landscape and may one day be of interest if the pollution in Benxi is better controlled.
