Algal blooms are sudden population explosions in marine or freshwater algae. Thes can result in severe aesthehetic impacts and can cause toxic poisoning of fish and shellfish. Where blue-green algae are involved there are potential toxic risks to mammals including man. Algal blooms are often a sign of eutrophication or nutrient enrichment of the water body.
