Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,531 km² (591 mi²). 1,521 km² (587 mi²) of it is land and 10 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.65% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 22,605 people, 8,875 households, and 6,239 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (38/mi²). There are 10,031 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.27% White, 0.61% Black or African American, 3.45% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 2.90% from two or more races. 1.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,875 households out of which 32.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.60% are married couples living together, 9.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% are non-families. 26.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.50% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 23.10% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 94.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,505, and the median income for a family is $37,284. Males have a median income of $29,045 versus $19,675 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,710. 14.30% of the population and 11.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.40% of those under the age of 18 and 10.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
