South Africa has granted Unregistered Cohabitation since 1999.

Five decisions of the Constitutional Court recognising same-sex partnerships in immigration (1999), granting same-sex couples the same financial status to married heterosexual partners (2002), allowing adoption by same-sex couples (2002), entitling same-sex couples to the same financial benefits as heterosexual couples (2003), recognising the children born to same-sex couples by artificial insemination are legitimate (2003).

At last in December 2004 Constitutional Court obliged government to extend full Civil marriage for same-sex couples.
