Đà Nẵng is a region and city in central Vietnam near the ancient capital of Huế. The Chữ Nôm characters for the city are "岘港".

In August 1858, French troops landed, under the orders of Napoleon III, beginning colonial occupation in the area. As a concession it was named Tourane in French. It came to be considered one of Indochina's five major cities.

In December 1996, the region was formally designated Đà Nẵng province. The government of Đà Nẵng city was inaugurated officially on January 1, 1997.
