Digenis Acritas

Digenis Acritas (greek: Διγενής Ακρίτας) was a byzantine. He was a mythical figure for whom many songs have been written by unknown writers. Acritas means that he was one of the guardians of the Byzantine borders. Such guardians were given land so that they could move to the borders with their families. Digenis was said to be set in the Byzantine-Arabian borders. He was a hero who could deal with hundreds of enemies at the same time. Moreover, his name Di-genos (Δι-γένος) in Greek means that he came from two races as his mother was said to be Arabian. The myths for him (Δημοτικά Τραγούδια) are part of the Byzantine cultural legacy to the Greeks.
