The word Dinar (in Arabic and Persian: دينار) traces its origin back to the Roman currency, the denarius (pl. denarii).

Numerous countries today use Dinar as the name for their currencies:

Most of the countries using dinar as the name of their currency are Arabic-speaking or were once part of the Ottoman Empire.
