Eagle's minimal essential medium
Eagle's minimal essential medium (EMEM) is a cell culture medium by Harry Eagle. It contains:
- amino acids
- Salts (Ferric nitrate nonahydrate, Potassium chloride, Magnesium sulfate, Sodium chloride, Sodium dihydrogen phosphate)
- glucose
- vitamins (Ascorbic acid, Folic acid, Nicotinamide, Riboflavin, B-12)
A variation of this EMEM, called DMEM, (Dulbecco/Vogt modified Eagle's minimal essential medium), which contains approx. four times as much of the vitamins and amino acids present in the original formula and two to 4 times more glucose. Additionally it contains iron. DMEM is suitable for most types of cells, including human, monkey, hamster, rat, mouse and chicken.
