Ekali (Greek: Εκάλη, Latin: Hecale) is a rather exclusive suburb in Attica, Greece -- just about 20 km north of Athens. Ekali is purely residential, which means there are no shops or night clubs. Ekali has strict building regulations to ensure the conservation of its character as a pleasant, green suburb. Ekali sits in the between the Athenian plain and the Penteli mountains. The plain is to the west, the forests of the mountains that are connected with the rest of the mountains lie to the east. Ekali is the northernmost division in the agglomeration as well as Megali Diktyo. Ekali is accessed with an interchange with GR-1/E75 (Athens - Lamia - Thessaloniki) at the 18th km near Varympompi to the southwest. The Penteli mountains in which they are forested and some of them are urbanized lie to the east. The Cephissus River lies to the west. The main street is Theseos (Theseus) Avenue which is also GR-83 and another road to Dionysos and Rea north of Ekali. Ekali is located SE of Thiva, S of Euboea and Oropos, NE of Kifissia and N of the Attiki Odos (number 6).
Until the 1960s and the 1970s, farmlands cover the western part of Ekali which existed into the 1990s. Most of the population are urban while until the 1960s and the 1970s. Luxury houses arrived in Ekali and into the forested parts. The houses in the 1980s and the 1990s reached the Penteli mountain. Housing continues to this day. the street plan is mainly of mixed triangles and lines that run parallel not as a grid. The streets has squares and circles which are aligned with local streets and one main street once connected with GR-1/E75 until 1995 and one in the middle of Theseos without encircling the traffic.
On September 7, 1999, the September 1999 earthquake rumbled Thrakomakedones causing no damages to properties. Most of the population are urban while until the 1960s and the 1970s
Ekali has few schools, lyceums, a gymnasium, banks, churches, a post office and a few squares (plateies) including Kennedy Square. A rest area is situated to the west in the service road west of the superhighway which features a McDonald's restaurant. Landmarks includes the Giannis Spyropoulos Museum.
In 2005, an off-road rally named the Ekali Adventure Trophy occurred.
