Four Classics
The Four Classics of Chinese literature refer to, in chronological order of publication:
- Romance of the Three Kingdoms
- Water Margin (also known as Outlaws of the Marsh)
- Journey to the West
- Dream of the Red Chamber
Some consider Jin Ping Mei (Golden Lotus) as the fifth. However, in many periods of Chinese history, it has been banned for being pornographic. It is still banned in mainland China.
