Gambela
Gambela is one of the nine ethnic divisions (kililoch) of Ethiopia. Its capital is Gambela. Covering 25,369 km2 in the west of the country along the border with Sudan, Gambela's population (as of 1999) is 206,000. It was previously known as Region 12.
Historically, Gambela is home to the indigenous Anuak. In recent years there has been significant violence between the Anuak and more recently arrived Ethiopians, who are generally referred to in this context as "Highlanders".
