The title of this article is incorrect because of technical limitations. The correct title is gedit.

gedit is an open-source, small UTF-8 compatible text editor for the GNOME desktop environment.

Designed for the X Window System (XFree86), it uses the GTK+ 2.0 and GNOME 2.0 libraries. Complete GNOME integration is featured, with support for drag and drop between Nautilus (the GNOME file manager); and the use of the GNOME help system, virtual file system, and printing framework. It features syntax highlighting and tabs for editing multiple files.

Recently, a new program called gPHPedit has been created, based off gEdit. It is designed for PHP and HTML text editing.
