General Re is one of the world's largest reinsurers. It specializes in cases which cannot be realistically insured by other reinsurers of lesser capacity. As a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, it is controlled by legendary investor Warren Buffett, who nonetheless leaves all day-to-day management to the company's professional staff. In good years;, it is a large source of cash flow to Berkshire Hathaway and has provided much of the cash that is then used by the company to acquire additional subsidiaries.
