Gomphothere

Gomphothere is an diverse group of extinct elephant-like animals, proboscideans. They differed from elephants in their tooth structure, particularly chewing surfaces on the molar teeth.

They appeared in the Miocene and Pliocene epochs, 12-1.6 million years ago.

Examples of Gompotheres are the extinct genera Platybelodon and Amebelodon.
