Introduction

Gordon College, a public two-year residential college, is located in Barnesville, GA. Gordon's college year is made up of three 15-week academic semesters: Fall, Spring & Summer. Enrollment at Gordon College is around 3,000 students, with around 600 living on campus. The college campus has 28 buildings and incorporates 125 acres, which includes an indoor swimming facility, ropes course, walking trail, basketball courts, tennis courts, soccer field & racquet ball courts.

Founding


Gordon College was founded in 1852, and originally served as a seminary. In 1872, Gordon College was named after Georgia native General John B. Gordon. General Gordon served as a Confederate corps commander in the American Civil War, and after the war served three terms in the U.S. Senate and two terms as Georgia's Governor. During this time Gordon College was Gordon Military College. Gordon College was admitted as a member of the University System of Georgia in 1972, as an associate-level college.

Academics

Gordon College offers associate degrees, most of which will transfer, in the following fields of study: Business Administration, Criminal Justice, History, Information Systems, Political Science, Psychology, Secretarial Science or Office Administration, Social Work, Sociology, Teacher Education, Art, English, Foreign Language, General Studies, Music, Theatre, Agriculture and Environmental, Sciences, Astronomy, Biological Sciences and Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Dental Hygiene, Forestry, Horticulture, Mathematics, Medical Technology, Occupational Therapy, Physical Science, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Physics, Pre-Pharmacy Respiratory Therapy.

Athletics


Gordon College competes in the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association and the National Junior College Athletic Association. The college fields both Men's and Women's Soccer, Men's and Women's Tennis, a Baseball team, and a Woman's Softball team. A Men's and Women's basketball team is in the works, and cheerleading. Gordon College's athletic teams are known as the Gordon College Highlanders.

There are also a wide variety of intramural sports to participate in: soccer, kickball, basketball, flag football, volleyball, and softball.
