Gradient (disambiguation)

In mathematics, gradient can mean one of two things:

The gradient of scalar field, which is a vector field.
The slope along a direction on a surface.

The two meanings are actually very related. If z=f(x, y) is a function of two variables determining a surface, then the gradient of this scalar field dotted with a unit vector gives the slope of the surface in the direction of the vector.
