The idyllic HKUST campus is built on hillsides overlooking the South China Sea.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) (Traditional Chinese: 香港科技大學) was established in 1991 as one of the eight universities in Hong Kong. The current president is Professor Paul Ching-wu Chu.

It is located on the Clear Water Bay peninsula in Sai Kung District and occupies a total area of 600,000 m². The site was formerly a British army camp and a Scout jamboree was held in 1986 before the commencement of construction.

A huge red sundial is placed at the entrance plaza and has become a distinguishing symbol of the university ever since. At January 2005, there are total 8,513 students and 439 faculty members at HKUST.

Being the youngest university in Hong Kong, HKUST has received many world-class honours so far. The Times Higher Education Supplement ranked HKUST as the 42nd best university in the world in 2004, its Engineering and IT programmes 20th, Science 50th, and Social Science 57th. HKUST's MBA program was ranked 44th best in the Financial Times 2005 global rankings.
