Howaldtswerke is a German shipyard founded 1838 in Kiel at the Bay of Kiel of the Baltic Sea. The founder August Howaldt built in 1850 the first German submarine Brandtaucher designed by Wilhelm Bauer. Today Howaldtswerke-Deutsche-Werft AG, or HDW for short, is a subsidiary of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, a group of German and European yards, as Kockums AB of Malmo and Hellenic Shipyards Co., Skaramangas, Greece.
