Iwama Ryu

Iwama Ryu is an aikido organization in which some of the students of Morihiro Saito, a close disciple of the founder of aikido Morihei Ueshiba are included. Most of Saito's students were however always members of the original organization Aikikai. Many of the Iwama Ryu members were allowed to choose between having their dan ranks in Iwama Ryu or in the Aikikai.

The focus of Iwama Ryu or Iwama Style Aikido is to follow the aikido taught by O'Sensei, then by Saito Sensei, as closely as possible, and not to change the techniques taught by O'Sensei along the way.

The highest Iwama Ryu ranks given was 7th dan, and it was given to Ulf Evenås and Paolo Corallini who also hold the title shihan in this style. Specific weapons ranks were also given within the Iwama Ryu. Other top instructors include Tony Sargeant 6th Dan and Daniel Toutain 6th Dan.

With Saito Sensei's death in 2002, a great number of the Iwama Ryu clubs joined an organization called Iwama Shin Shin Aiki Shurenkai, formed by Morihiro Saito's son Hitohiro Saito. Others rejoined the biggest and eldest organization for Aikido, the Aikikai
