Joseph Nasi
Joseph Nasi (also known as Joćo Miquez) was influential in the Ottoman court of both Sultan Suleiman I and his son Selim II. He was appointed the Lord of Tiberias, with the expressed aim of resettling Jews and encouraging industry there. Unfortunately, this failed. Later, he was appointed the Duke of Naxos and the Seven Islands. He also brought about war with Venice, which the Ottomans won, and Venice lost the island of Cyprus. After the death of Selim, he lost influence in the Ottoman court, but until he died in 1579, he was allowed to keep his titles and pension.
