Kiwi (horse)
Kiwi was a race horse who won the 1983 Melbourne Cup.
Kiwi was brought by Waverly sheep farmer Snow Lupton for the just NZ$1000. Originally brought as a farm horse, Kiwi was put to use chasing stock on the ridges of the Lupton farm. He was never intended to be a galloper.
Legend has it that Lupton was dared by his friends to enter Kiwi in the local Wanganui Derby to see how he ran. When Kiwi was entered in the 1983 Melbourne cup , he was considered a distant long shot by the bookmakers, yet he managed to come from last in the final strait of the cup to take victory. After the victory Kiwi was retired to the Lupton’s farm.
