Map of the Croatian islands
A vast majority of the Adriatic sea islands are located near the northeastern, Croatian coast.
These are the larger ones, sorted approximately from the northernmost to the southernmost ones:
- Krk (quite large, has an international airport)
- Cres
- Lošinj
- the Brijuni islands (a national park)
- Goli otok (previously known as a prison, translation: "naked island")
- Rab
- Pag (known for its cheese and its sea salt)
- Susak (a handful of people with a rather characteristic dialect)
- Olib
- Silba
- Ist
- Unije
- Dugi otok (translation: "long island")
- Ugljan
- Pašman
- the Kornati archipelago (also a national park)
- Iž
- Murter
- Zlarin
- Čiovo
- Šolta
- Drvenik
- Brač (known for its stone quarries)
- Hvar (the sunniest one)
- Vis (inhabited since ancient Greece, previously a naval base)
- Korčula (the most populated one)
- Lastovo
- Mljet (includes a national park)
- the Elafit islands - Koločep, Lopud, Šipan
- Palagruža (a tiny, southernmost one)
All of the islands are tourist resorts these days.
There are two peninsulas, too, Istra and Pelješac.
