Michael Mates

Michael John Mates (born 9 June 1934) is a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. He is member of Parliament for East Hampshire.

He was first elected to Parliament in 1974, for Petersfield, Hampshire, and has represented East Hampshire since 1983. He has been a Chairman of the 1922 committee, and from 1992 to 1993 was Minister of State at the Northern Ireland Office. He resigned after a scandal involving fugitive businessman Asil Nadir.

Mates's son, James Mates, is a senior reporter and presenter for ITN.
