Jones generally wrote the tunes, Strummer the lyrics. He was briefly in the band General Public. He later formed the bands Big Audio Dynamite and Big Audio Dynamite II, in which he was the lead singer. After the dissolution of Big Audio Dynamite II, he formed another band, Carbon/Silicon. The band is currently touring the United Kingdom in a number of benefit concerts and have recorded three albums: Sample This, Peace, Dope Factory Boogie and The Grand Delusion, although none have been released yet (as of February 2005).

The song MP.FREE reflects Mick's view about P2P filesharing of music. Mick believes that people should be free to rip, mix and burn music and encourages fans to record and distribute gig recordings.

He has become an occasional producer, and in late 2002/early 2003 was at the controls for the debut of London band The Libertines (their first album being Up The Bracket), whose Clash influence (as well as that of other quintessentially English bands like the Kinks) was clear. The CD was critically very well-received, in the UK and America, and Jones appeared to enjoy the success of his proteges, and stayed on to produce their second album, eponymously named The Libertines. He is now producing the debut album of Pete Doherty's new group Babyshambles.

This Mick Jones isn't related to the other Mick Jones who was the guitarist of classic rock bands Spooky Tooth and Foreigner.
