An idol of Nandi in a Chennai temple

Nandi is the white bull which Shiva rides, and the leader of the Ganas. In every temple that houses a Shiva linga, there is usually an idol of Nandi opposite the linga on the entrance of the shrine. Due to this the word "Nandi" is sometimes used in Tamil as a metaphor for a person blocking the way.
