The Palestinian flag has been in use by Palestinians to represent their national aspirations since the middle of the 20th century.
The flag is constituted of three equal horizontal stripes (black, white and green from top to bottom) overlaid by a red isosceles triangle issuing from the hoist and reaching one third of the way to the fly. Red is the color of Arab nationalism, and green is the color of Islam. All four of these colors are known as the Pan-Arab colors.
In November 15, 1988, the flag was adopted by the PLO as the flag of the self-proclaimed "State of Palestine".
