Sandra Claire Howard (née Paul) was born in 1941. Her father was an RAF Doctor and her mother an Oxford scholar. Despite this, Sandra Howard never attended university and instead trained as a model and became one of the leading fashion models of the 1960s. She is married to the British Conservative Party leader Michael Howard.

While staying with Her Majesty's Ambassador to the United States of America she famously dined with John F. Kennedy, President of the United States, on the eve of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.

Although occasionally appearing in magazines and catalogues, Sandra Howard has largely given up her modelling career, and has since written a novel. She has also begun working with the drug rehabilitation charity Adaction, about which she made an impassioned speech to the British Conservative Party Conference in 2004, the first by a leader's wife.

In 1959, the then Sandra Paul married Robin Douglas-Home (1959-1965), the nephew of the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Alec Douglas-Home, by whom she has one son Sholto Douglas-Home (born 1962), who's Godfather was Frank Sinatra. The marriage was dissolved in 1962, and in 1965 Robin Douglas-Home committed suicide. She went on to marry David Wynne-Morgan, a public-relations executive, but the marriage lasted just four years and also ended in divorce. Whilst married to advertising executive Nigel Grandfield, she met the aspiring barrister, Michael Howard, at a ball. When he learnt she had never read Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald he had a copy sent to her the next day. She eventually left Nigel Grandfield and they later divorced, leaving her free to marry Michael Howard in 1975. They have two children, a son, Nicholas Howard (born 1976) and a daughter, Larissa Howard (born 1977).

Through her son Sholto Douglas-Home, Sandra Howard has two grandchildren Louis Douglas-Home and Tallula Douglas-Home.
