Tailpiece
The tailpiece is an element found in all musical instruments of the violin family. It is usually made of ebony, though other woods such as rosewood or boxwood may be used. The function of the tailpiece is to anchor the strings. The tailpiece itself attaches to the end of the instrument by means of a wire or cord, originally made of animal gut, wrapped around the end button or end pin.
Devices to assist in the tuning of the instrument may be affixed to the tailpiece.
