The Song
The single was co-written and co-produced by Mariah and the Flyte Time team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The song was performed with the assistance of R&B singer, Joe and boy band 98 Degrees. The love ballad provides a metaphorical closure for Mariah's album, Rainbow, as it represents the Rainbow (happiness) that comes after the storm (relationship problems). The song was inspired by Mariah's boyfriend at the time, Luis Miguel.
Chart Success
"Thank God I Found You" was one of Mariah's last hits, hitting #1 in the USA, earning her a record breaking 15th #1 hit, which became her last for 5 years; it peaked at #10 in the UK. Although the single overall was a success, critics and fans alike began to see the beginning of the end for Mariah's singles as the single relied heavily on first week commercial sales and airplay of the Make It Last Remix (in lieu of the original) to succeed. The single went on to achieve Gold certification.
Awards
"Thank God I Found You" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, but it did not win.
Music Video
The music video of the song is a very simplistic video that simply shows Mariah performing the song with Joe and 98 Degrees at a Minnesota radio station's music fair. The video is noted, however for its saturation of blue skies and intimate moments of Mariah carousing with her dog Jack, and writing lyrics. There is also a music video for the "Make It Last Remix" that features Mariah with braids in a nightclub with Joe and Nas. The video is grainy and filmed to simulate the effect of being a home video.
Remixes
The main remix of this song is known by its common moniker of "Thank God I Found You/Make It Last Forever" (or by its technical term as "Thank God I Found (Make It Last Remix)" The remix, which is entirely resung, was created by interpolating the Keith Sweat song, "Make It Last Forever". However, in all reality, it is more or less, a cover of that song with few lyrical/melodical similarities to the original version. The remix again features Joe from the original song, but not 98 Degrees. They are also joined by rapper Nas.
There were no club/dance remixes commissioned for this song. However, UK producing team, Stargate did produce the "UK Stargate Radio Mix", a mix that strips down the production and sythesizers of the clickity click click beat of the original to give it a more orchestral and organic, yet romantic feel. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis also created the synthisizer heavy, yet aptly named "Celebatory Remix".
