The Man Who Laughs is a novel by Victor Hugo about the changes in Restoration England, as told through the story of a man whose deformity causes him to always smile. The novel was adapted into a film in 1928 starring Conrad Veidt.
The lead character in that film was the inspiration for the Batman supervillain, the Joker. The title was later explicitly referenced in the graphic novel, Batman: The Man Who Laughs.
