Yuval Ne'eman

Yuval Ne'eman is an Israeli physicist and politician.

He was born in Tel Aviv, Israel. Active against the British in Palestine (1946–7), he became a captain in the Israeli Defence Force (1947), deputy director of defence intelligence (1955–7), and defence attaché in London (1958–60).

In 1962, he proposed (independently from Murray Gell-Mann) the Eightfold way symmetry of the hadrons. He was professor of physics at Tel Aviv (1965–73), then at the University of Texas, Austin, and (1979–97) director of the Sackler Institute of Advanced Studies.

He founded the Tehiya political party and was a member of the Knesset (1982-92), holding ministerial posts in the areas of science and development. In 1983 he founded the Israeli Space Agency.
